Remolacha // Beetroot

Don’t speak Spanish? read the english version below.

When I was a little girl, beetroot was my favorite vegetable, probably because it was purple and purple was my favorite color or because it is so sweet, what ever it was I’ve always loved it.

So why is beetroot still on my diet? It has many benefits to our health, but before I write them for you, let me tell you this fun fact: Beetroot comes from the same family as spinach! I wouldn’t have guessed it but if you look closely at the leaves you can se the resemblance!

remolacha1Ok now the smart part, why is it good? According to the BBC:

  • It helps to increase white blood cells which are responsible to detect and eliminate abnormal cells.
  • They are an excellent source of folic acid, manganese and potassium.
  • Their color purple I was such a fan of is betacyanin which helps suppresse the development of some types of cancer.
  • It is rich in fibre which is favourable for the bowel function and can prevent constipation and lower cholesterol.  It also increases antioxidants and white blood cells helping to prevent cancer.
  • Beetroot has also a beneficial effect on blood pressure by reducing it and lowering the risk of heart disease and stroke. Its nutrients may also help in heart attract survival.

So add more beetroot to your diet, its not only tasty and healthy, it also makes your food look so much cooler 😉
